What do these RPE numbers mean?
- RPE 10 — true max, zero reps left in the tank.
- RPE 9 — one rep left.
- RPE 8 — two reps left. Most "working set" territory.
- RPE 7 — three reps left. Common for technique work or accumulation phases.
- RPE 6.5 — light, smooth, easily four+ reps left.
What is RPE?
RPE stands for "Rate of Perceived Exertion." In powerlifting and strength training, it's almost always specifically a 10-point autoregulation scale, popularized by Mike Tuchscherer in the early 2010s. RPE 10 is a true max — you couldn't have done one more rep even if your life depended on it. RPE 9 is one rep left in the tank. RPE 8 is two reps left. And so on.
Half-point increments (8.5, 9.5) exist for finer granularity. Anything below RPE 6 is usually just called "easy."
How the RPE chart works
Tuchscherer's RPE chart maps any (reps, RPE) combination to a percentage of your 1RM. For example:
- 1 rep at RPE 10 = 100% of 1RM (by definition)
- 1 rep at RPE 9 = 96% of 1RM (one rep in reserve)
- 5 reps at RPE 8 = 81% of 1RM (two reps left after 5)
- 8 reps at RPE 7 = 70% of 1RM
Multiply that percentage by your 1RM and you get the weight you should be hitting for that prescription. The calculator above does the math for you and rounds to your gym's plate availability.
Why use RPE instead of fixed percentages?
Fixed percentages assume your 1RM is constant. In reality, your max bounces around 5–10% based on sleep, stress, nutrition, time-of-day, and where you are in a training block. A programmed 80% triple on a bad day might be a grinder RPE 9; on a great day, the same weight might fly up at RPE 7.
RPE prescriptions invert this: instead of "lift this weight," the program says "lift the weight that feels like this." That gives you a self-adjusting program where the load matches your actual capacity that day.
Common RPE prescriptions
Top set + back-offs
A common Tuchscherer-style template: "Squat 5 @ 8, then 3 × 5 at 90% of that." You work up by feel until you hit a five at RPE 8 (two reps left), then drop the weight 10% and do three more sets of five. The "5 @ 8" weight changes day to day, but the structure stays the same.
Triples up to RPE 8
Used heavily in peaking blocks. "Bench 3 @ 8" means work up to a triple where the last rep felt like it had two reps left in it. A good way to do heavy work without crushing yourself.
AMRAP capped at RPE 9
Hypertrophy work where the last set is "as many reps as possible, cap at RPE 9." You stop one rep short of failure regardless of whether that's 8 reps or 15. Protects recovery while still getting a high-stimulus set.
Reading the chart in your head
A useful shortcut: each "RPE step" is roughly 2–3% of 1RM. So if 5 reps at RPE 8 is 81%, then 5 reps at RPE 9 is about 84% and 5 reps at RPE 7 is about 78%. Similarly, each rep above or below the prescribed rep target changes the percentage by roughly 3%. 5 @ 8 is 81%; 6 @ 8 is 78%; 4 @ 8 is 84%.
These approximations get you in the right ballpark without looking at the chart. The calculator gets you the precise number.
RPE vs. RIR — are they the same thing?
Mostly, yes. RIR ("Reps In Reserve") is a more modern relabeling of the same concept: RIR 0 = RPE 10, RIR 1 = RPE 9, etc. Bodybuilders and hypertrophy-focused coaches tend to prefer RIR; powerlifters usually stick with RPE. The math is identical.
FAQ
How do I know my 1RM if I haven't tested it?
Use the 1RM calculator to estimate it from a recent set of 3–8 reps. If you're following a real RPE-based program, the program itself will calibrate over the first few weeks regardless of where you start.
Is the Tuchscherer chart accurate for high-rep sets?
It's most accurate at 1–8 reps. Beyond 8, RPE becomes more dependent on muscular endurance than pure strength, and the relationship to 1RM gets fuzzier. The chart still works as a guide for 9–12 reps, but expect more individual variation.
What's the difference between this and a percentage-based program?
A percentage program tells you "Squat 305 lb for 5 × 5 this week." An RPE program tells you "Squat 5 × 5 @ RPE 8 this week" and lets you find the weight. RPE is more flexible and self-correcting; percentages are simpler when you know your 1RM is current.
